Remove Skin Imperfections with Ease
Cryotherapy (also known as cryosurgery) is a state-of-the-art treatment that effectively and safely removes benign skin lesions using a precise freezing technique. This minimally invasive procedure harnesses the power of liquefied nitrous oxide to destroy unwanted tissue, ensuring a quick and efficient treatment process with minimal discomfort.
How CryoPen® Works?
The CryoPen® device works by delivering a controlled, targeted spray of liquefied nitrous oxide onto the lesion. This rapid cooling process freezes the cell fluid within the lesion, causing it to form ice crystals. These ice crystals then rupture the cell membrane, ultimately destroying the lesion from within. The CryoPen® is designed to focus only on the affected tissue, leaving the surrounding healthy skin untouched.
Benefits of CryoPen® treatment
Cryotherapy stands out from other lesion removal treatments due to its numerous advantages:
Non-Invasive: Unlike surgical procedures, CryoPen® treatment does not require any cuts or incisions, reducing the risk of infection and promoting faster healing.
No Anaesthesia Needed: The treatment is generally well-tolerated, and there is no need for local anaesthesia, making the process simpler and more comfortable.
Minimal Scarring: Because the treatment is so precise, the risk of scarring is minimal, making it an excellent choice for visible areas like the face.
Efficiency: Treatments are quick, often completed in a matter of seconds, and usually require only one session to achieve optimal results.
Commonly Treated Lesions
CryoPen® treatment is highly effective in treating a wide range of benign skin lesions, including:
Warts: Both common warts and plantar warts can be effectively removed.
Pigmented Spots: Sun spots and age spots respond well to CryoPen® treatments.
Cherry Angiomas: These small, red vascular lesions can be quickly and safely removed.
Seborrheic Keratoses: These non-cancerous skin growths are easily treated with CryoPen®.
Skin Tags: CryoPen® can remove these small, benign growths often found in areas of friction.
Treatment Procedure

The CryoPen® treatment is straightforward and consists of two freeze cycles with a thaw period in between.
First Freeze Cycle: The clinician holds the CryoPen® applicator as close as possible to the lesion, moving it quickly towards and away from it. The duration depends on the lesion's size and depth, ranging from 1 to 30 seconds.
Thaw: The treated tissue is allowed to thaw for about 30 seconds.
Second Freeze Cycle: The tissue undergoes a second freeze cycle, which is quicker than the first.
Results

CryoPen® delivers exceptional results, often achieving complete removal of lesions in a single session.
Immediately after Treatment
Immediately following CryoPen treatment, patients may experience some localised effects. The treated area might appear red and slightly swollen, resembling a mild sunburn. This reaction is a normal part of the healing process and indicates that the treatment is taking effect.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure, but some may experience a stinging or burning sensation. This discomfort typically subsides shortly after the treatment, often within a few minutes. However, any residual soreness or sensitivity in the treated area may last for a few hours to a couple of days, depending on individual pain tolerance and the extent of the treatment.
Longevity of Results
The results of CryoPen treatment can be quite long-lasting. Many patients see complete removal of the lesion after just one session. In cases where multiple treatments are necessary, results can still be achieved within a few sessions. Once the lesion is successfully treated, it is unlikely to return, leading to sustained clear skin in the treated area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will there be scarring?
CryoPen® treatments cause minimal scarring due to limited damage to connective tissues. Hypopigmented lesions may be visible until they darken.
How long will the lesion take to heal?
A blister may form for up to 5 days, followed by scabbing. Healing typically takes 2-6 weeks, depending on the lesion's depth and location.
How many treatments are needed?
Most lesions respond to a single treatment, but deeper lesions may require multiple sessions for complete removal.
How long will the results last?
Cryotherapy usually provides permanent lesion removal, although some lesions may be harder to remove.
Will activities be limited after treatment?
Activities are not restricted, but the treated area should be protected from damage or abrasion. Swimming and showering are permissible.
What follow-up is necessary?
Follow-up appointments at 2-week intervals are recommended to monitor results and provide additional treatments if needed.
Can anyone have the treatment?
Yes, but skin types and lesion locations should be carefully assessed before treatment.
Risks for darker-skinned patients?
Melanocytes in darker skin are sensitive to cold injury and may be damaged, leading to permanent pigment loss. Darker-skinned patients should consider this risk.
Is there a change in pigmentation after treatment?
Hypopigmentation (lightening) and hyperpigmentation (darkening) may occur. These changes typically last a few months but can be longer-lasting. Discuss this risk with your practitioner before treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
Patients may experience pain when the ice reaches the lesion's caudal extent, requiring treatment to stop. A slight stinging sensation may persist for a few minutes after treatment.
